“Can You Help Me Find It?”

Posted on June 5th, 2013

About two months ago, Jared and I were deciding if we should continue to rent or sell our town home in Chicago. As we prayed and prayed about it, the song, “Can You Help Me Find It?” by Sidewalk Prophets kept coming on the radio and then playing over and over in my head for the rest of the day. Being the words person that I am, I listened intently to the lyrics. As I began memorizing them, they became my prayer.

I’ve been thinking a lot about wisdom recently. One lesson I am learning about wisdom is that in order to gain it, we must earnestly, actively seek it out. This truth has been confirmed to me recently as Jared and I have been reading through Proverbs this month. We are just on the first few chapters because we’re reading one each day but the amount of times that wisdom is used already has stood out to me. Last night Jared and I laid in bed and talked about what we had read and how these truths could affect our lives. We thought back to our town home. What if instead of just buying the house because it was an exciting step as newlyweds, we would have really asked God if it was the right choice and truly waited and listened for the answer before moving forward? Maybe we wouldn’t be stuck with an “upside down” town home. Or maybe it was the right choice and it’s just the situation we’re in. The answer doesn’t really matter now because we must move forward with where our circumstances are currently, but we are trying to learn our lesson through this experience. Instead of just making decisions without spending adequate time to pray, reflect, and listen, we are learning to slow down and be intentional to seek out wisdom. We are learning that just because we may think we know what we should do in a given situation, it is so crucial to ask God to give us wisdom and show us what to do. He knows much more about how it will all play out than we do and we’d much rather ask the Holy Spirit to lead and guide us than depend on our limited understanding.

The same goes for how we are parenting Olivia. I am finding myself asking God a lot for wisdom in knowing what she needs from us as her parents. A lot of my prayers surround the topic of sleep (Should we let her cry it out? Should I feed her in the middle of the night when she cries?), and I am finding that as I quiet myself to listen, He is giving me nudges to know what her specific temperament needs.

As I finished my reading in Proverbs this morning, I am reminded to not just passively ask for wisdom without truly seeking it out. Oh, for the grace and strength to put actions to these words and thoughts. May you and I both wholeheartedly pursue wisdom today.

“My son, if you will receive my words and treasure my commandments within you, make your ear attentive to wisdom, incline your heart to understanding; For if you cry for discernment, lift your voice for understanding; If you seek her as silver and search for her as for hidden treasures; then you will discern the fear of the Lord and discover the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom; From His mouth come knowledge and understanding.” Proverbs 2:1-6

Can You Help Me Find It
Sidewalk Prophets

I don’t know where to go from here

It all used to seem so clear

I’m finding I can’t do this on my own
I don’t know where to go from here

As long as I know that You are near

I’m done fighting,

I’m finally letting go
I will trust in You

You’ve never failed before

I will trust in You
If there’s a road I should walk

Help me find it

If I need to be still

Give me peace for the moment

Whatever Your will,

whatever Your will
Can you help me find it?

Can you help me find it?

I’m giving You fear and You give faith

I giving you doubt, You give me grace

For every step I’ve never been alone
Even when it hurts,

You’ll have Your way

Even in the valley I will say

With every breath,

You’ve never let me go
I will wait for You

You’ve never failed before

I will wait for You
If there’s a road I should walk

Help me find it

If I need to be still

Give me peace for the moment

Whatever Your will,

whatever Your will
Can you help me find it?

Can you help me find it?
I lift my empty hands (Come fill me up again)

Have Your way my King (I give my all to You)
I lift my eyes again (Was blind but now I see)

‘Cause You are all I need
If there’s a road I should walk

Help me find it

If I need to be still

Give me peace for the moment

Whatever Your will,
whatever Your will
Can you help me find it?
Can you help me find it?
